Bed sizes, bed height and nightstands
The bed takes up much of a bedroom, and the space around it is what separates a room that’s easy from one you keep bumping into. Start with the mattress size, then measure what’s left around it.
The numbers at a glance
Size in centimetres, not by name
Common mattresses: 90 × 190 for a single, then 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm.[1] Names change between countries and shops; one shop’s “king” is another’s “queen”. Always ask for the size in centimetres.
The space around the bed
Leave at least 76 cm at the sides and the foot, and 91 cm for comfort.[2] With a dresser, keep 91 cm in front so the drawers open, and 61 to 76 cm in front of a wardrobe.[7]

Bed height
A bed frame usually sits at about knee height, 30 to 41 cm, with a mattress of 25 to 38 cm on top, so your feet rest on the floor when you sit on the edge.[3] The total height with the mattress is usually 46 to 64 cm, averaging about 61 cm.[4]
The nightstand
Keep the nightstand top about level with the mattress, 46 to 61 cm wide.[6] Place it about 5 cm from the bed so you can reach it lying down.[5] Nightstands usually stand 61 to 71 cm high.[5]
