Dining table size: for four, six or eight

Before the shape or the colour of a dining table, there are two questions: how many will sit at it, and how much room the space leaves around it. The right table is the one a chair pulls out from easily, not the one that fills the room.

The numbers at a glance

  • 61 cm of table edge for each person.[1]
  • 91 cm between the table edge and the wall, so a chair pulls out.[1]
  • 71–76 cm table height, with a seat about 46 cm high.[3][4]
  • 61 cm of rug beyond the table on every side.[2]

Size by the number of seats

Each person needs about 61 cm of table edge; for roomier seating, make it 66 to 71 cm.[1] That gives these sizes:

People Rectangular (length × width) Round (diameter)
2 76–91 × 76–91 cm (square) 76–91 cm
4 122–152 × 76–91 cm 102–122 cm
6 152–183 × 91–102 cm 137–152 cm
8 213–244 × 102–107 cm 168–183 cm

The space around the table

Leave at least 91 cm between the table edge and a wall or piece, so a chair pulls out and someone sits down.[1] If people will walk behind those seated, make it 107 to 122 cm.[1]

So the room needs the table’s size plus 91 cm on every side. A six-seat table at its largest (183 × 102 cm) needs about 3.7 × 2.9 m.

Rectangular or round?

  • Round: everyone sees everyone, and there are no corners to knock. It suits square rooms and four or six people. Beyond eight, a round table becomes awkward.[1]
  • Rectangular: suits long rooms and reception rooms, and six people or more.

Height: table and chair

A dining table stands 71 to 76 cm high.[3] A dining chair seat is about 46 cm high, leaving about 30 cm between the seat and the table top, the space your legs and hands move in.[4] If the chair has arms, check they slide under the table.

The rug under the table

The rug should reach at least 61 cm beyond the table on every side, so a chair stays on it as you pull it out.[2] Leave about 30 cm between the rug’s edge and the wall.[2]

  • Four seats: a rug of about 2.4 × 3 m.[2]
  • Six seats: a rug of about 2.7 × 3.7 m.[2]
  • Eight seats: a rug of about 3 × 4.3 m.[2]

And the room in the picture?

The room above is 3.6 × 3.5 m. A six-seat table at its largest (183 cm) needs 3.65 m, so it is a little tight. A six-seat table 152 cm long leaves 91 cm on every side with ease.
