Arranging a long reception room: two zones or three?

In most homes the reception room is one long room that has to hold sitting and dining, and sometimes a salon too. The question people ask isn’t “what goes in it”, it’s “how do I divide it”. The answer sits in two numbers: the room’s length and its width.

The same room in two zones: a Tando sofa, armchair and coffee table on a rug in front, a Plure dining table with six chairs at the far end, and a clear walkway by the windows.

The numbers at a glance

  • 91 cm between the table edge and a wall or piece, so a chair pulls out easily.[1]
  • 107–122 cm if people will walk behind those seated at the table.[1]
  • 2.1–3 m across a seating group where conversation stays easy.[2]
  • 76–91 cm for the walkway that runs the length of the room.[4][2]

Divide it into zones, not along its walls

The common mistake is to push every piece against the walls and leave the middle empty. The room looks longer, the seating drifts apart, and conversation happens from end to end.

Instead, divide the length into zones: each with its own seating and rug, and the walkway running along one side only. In the picture above, the back of the sofa separates sitting from dining without a wall.

The walkway on one side

Let the walkway run the length of the room on one side, usually by the windows or the door people come in through. Make it 76 to 91 cm wide.[4][2] Where it passes the dining table, leave at least 107 cm so no one knocks the chairs.[1]

Draw your reception room

Type the room’s length and width and how many sit at the table, and the plan draws itself to scale.

Two zones fit: sitting and dining.

Two zones need a length of about 6.6 m, three zones about 8.7 m.

Two zones or three?

“Three zones” means a salon for guests, a living area for the family, and dining. Each needs its own length:

  • Dining: the table’s length plus 91 cm at each end. Each person needs about 61 cm at the table, so a six-seat table runs 152 to 183 cm and the whole zone is about 3.6 m.[1] A dining table stands 71 to 76 cm high.[3]
  • Living: 2.1 to 3 m, the span of an easy conversation.[2]
  • Salon: a second seating group, at least 2.1 m.[2]
Dining Two zones need a length of Three zones need a length of
4 seats about 6.2 m about 8.3 m
6 seats about 6.6 m about 8.7 m
8 seats about 7.1 m about 9.2 m

And the width? About 3 m at least: a 2.1 m seating group and a 90 cm walkway, or the dining table with its chairs and the walkway behind them.

Order them from the door

  • The salon by the entrance. Guests sit down without crossing the whole home.
  • Dining toward the kitchen. Food takes the shortest way.
  • Living in the middle or at the quiet end. In front of the screen, away from the path.

What divides a room without a wall

  • The back of a sofa. A sofa with its back to the dining table closes the sitting area on its own.
  • A rug for each zone. The rug draws the edge of the seating on the floor.
  • A sideboard or console. Behind the sofa or on the dining wall, it gives each zone its own character.

Questions we hear often

What is a three-zone reception room?

A reception room with three areas: a salon for guests, a living area for the family, and dining. With a six-seat table it needs a length of about 8.7 m. Shorter than that, two zones sit more comfortably.

What is the narrowest reception room for sitting and dining?

About 3 m. That fits a seating group and a 90 cm walkway, or a six-seat table with the walkway behind the chairs.

Where should the dining table go?

At the end toward the kitchen, with at least 91 cm between the table edge and the wall so the chairs pull out.

Can an L-shape work in a long reception room?

Yes, in the living zone if it has a free corner, with the walkway on the other side. If people walk through the room to other rooms, a sofa and armchairs leave easier movement.
